levels?
Blood glucose is the amount of glucose in your
blood at a given time. It is important to check your blood
glucose because it will:

glucose level at that time

Alert you if your blood glucose level is too
high or too low

Show you how food, exercise, medication,
illness and even stress affect your blood glucose levels

Help you and your diabetes healthcare team
make changes to your lifestyle and medication that will
improve your blood glucose management and long-term health.
Insulin therapy is the basis of treatment for
type 1 diabetes. When insulin was first discovered and made
available for people with diabetes, there was only one kind of
fast-acting insulin. This required several injections a day.
Today, there are a variety of insulin's that can be chosen
and/or combined to help you best manage your diabetes.

Eat healthy

Eat three meals each day at regular times
and space meals no more than six hours apart. You may
benefit from a healthy snack.

Limit sugars and sweets, such as sugar,
regular pop, desserts, candies, jam and honey. These foods
will increase your blood glucose.

Eat a variety of foods that are higher in
fiber (such as whole grain breads and cereals, lentils,
dried beans and peas, brown rice, fruits and vegetables) and
lower in fat.

Limit the amount of high-fat food you eat,
such as fried foods, chips and pasties, which can cause
weight gain.

If you are thirsty, drink water instead of
regular pop or fruit juice, which will raise your blood
glucose level.

See a registered dietitian who specializes
in diabetes for personalized nutritional counseling. Ask
your doctor for a referral or check with your local Diabetes
Association office.
Keep active

Try to be active most days of the week.

Whenever you can, walk instead of taking the
car. If you have to drive, park in the spot farthest from
the door.

Start slowly and gradually increase the
amount of effort; for instance, progress from strolling to
brisk walking.

Talk to your diabetes healthcare team to
learn how to adjust your insulin and food to prevent low
blood glucose levels while exercising.

Take precautions against low blood glucose
while exercising. Carry some form of carbohydrate and extra
food with you when you are active.

If you feel symptoms of low blood glucose,
stop and test your level.
-
Wear a MedicAlert® identification and carry
a record of the names and amounts of insulin you use and any
other medications you use regularly.

Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes and
socks.
-
Stop exercising if you are in pain or feel
tired.
