Diabetes Medication
Commonly Used Diabetes Medications: An Overview

Diabetes is a serious condition but it IS manageable.
This resource will help you understand one part of your diabetes care
– commonly used diabetes pills.
Important facts to know…
-
Pills used to treat diabetes do not have insulin in them. For pills to work, the pancreas still has to make insulin. Pills are used only by people who have
type 2
diabetes. They should not be used during pregnancy, breast-feeding, or if you are trying to get pregnant.
-
Diabetes pills help you manage your diabetes, but they are not a cure. Following a healthy eating plan and being active are still very important.
-
Pills taken together may cause serious side effects. If you take diabetes pills, check with your health provider* before taking any other drugs – either prescribed or over-the-counter such as cough
syrup. Always keep your doctor informed about any drugs you are taking, including herbs and homeopathic remedies.
-
Herbs are popular because they are viewed as being natural. Natural does not necessarily mean safe. Herbs and other such remedies can be very potent. Always consult your health provider before taking anything
new. A knowledgeable herbalist or naturopath will want to know what drugs you are taking before recommending a remedy.
-
Check with you health provider about drinking alcohol while taking diabetes pills. Not only can alcohol cause serious problems when taken with certain drugs, but it can also increase the risk of low blood sugar reactions. Drinking alcohol with a meal may be safe to do periodically, but check with your health provider first.
-
It’s important to test your blood sugar levels as often as your health provider recommends. Keep a record of each result and special situation – for example: “Forgot to take noon pill.” or, “Went for half-hour walk at 3 p.m.” Show your record to your health provider at each visit.
-
Insulin may be introduced to manage type 2 diabetes
when
-diabetes pills have reached maximum dosage; and/or
-combinations of diabetes pills are tried
-and neither is effective in controlling blood sugar levels.
-
Taking diabetes pills instead of insulin does not mean your diabetes is ‘the good
type
diabetes’ or that it is ‘not as serious’ as diabetes requiring insulin.
-
Illness can increase your blood sugar level. Although you may feel sick and unable to eat, it’s very important to take your diabetes
pills. Talk to your health provider about sick day management.
Can diabetes pills help me?
Only people with type 2 diabetes
can use pills to manage their diabetes. These pills work best when used with meal planning and exercise. This way you have three therapies working together to lower your blood glucose levels.
Diabetes pills don't work for everyone. Although most people find that their blood glucose levels go down when they begin taking pills, their blood glucose levels may not go near the normal range.
What are the chances that diabetes pills will work for you?
Your chances are low if you have had diabetes for more than 10 years or already take more than 20 units of insulin each day. On the other hand, your chances are good if you developed diabetes recently or have needed little or no insulin to keep your blood glucose levels near normal.
Diabetes pills sometimes stop working after a few months or years. The cause is often unknown. This doesn't mean your diabetes is worse. When this happens, oral combination therapy can help.
Even if diabetes pills do bring your blood glucose levels near the normal range, you may still need to take insulin if you have a severe infection or need surgery. Pills may not be able to control blood glucose levels during these stressful times when blood glucose levels shoot up.
Also, if you plan to become pregnant, you will need to control your diabetes with diet and exercise or with insulin. It is not safe for pregnant women to take oral diabetes medications.
There is no "best" pill or treatment for type
ii diabetes. You may need to try more than one type of pill, combination of pills, or pills plus insulin.
